Tow truck driver struck, killed in East New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – A tow truck driver died Saturday when a pickup crashed into the rear of a disabled van he was working to remove from the side of Interstate 10.

Fox 8 reports that the incident happened at 2:43 a.m. on the shoulder of eastbound I-10 in the area of Ridgeway Boulevard.

Police say the flatbed tow truck driver was working to load a disabled van onto his truck when a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck crashed into the back of the disabled van. The van then collided with the tow truck. The pickup truck left the roadway and stopped in the grass.

The 50-year-old tow truck driver died at the scene of the crash. Authorities have not released his name to the public.

Police have identified the driver of the pickup truck as 34-year-old Kirk Jefferson. They say Jefferson suffered only minor injuries but that he faces a charge of vehicular homicide.

A full investigation of the incident is underway.
