OPELOUSAS, LA – A 22-year-old man from Breaux Bridge died early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run accident on a state highway in Opelousas, reports KLFY 10.
Police say the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. on the southbound side of LA-182 near Whispering Oaks Drive, which is just west of I-49.
The investigation thus far suggests that the victim was biking south on LA-182 when a southbound Toyota Camry struck him from behind. The force of the collision threw the victim from his bike and onto the northbound side of LA-182. He was then hit by a second car, which fled the scene.
The victim, identified as Davonte Chane Edwards, died at the scene of the accident. Police took toxicology samples from both the driver of the Toyota and the cyclist.
Authorities are looking for the driver of the second vehicle. Anyone with information to share is asked to contact the Louisiana State Police.
A full investigation is underway.
